چکیده

E-textile technology is rapidly progressing, allowing for the development of truly wearable computers as well as very large-scale computing textiles. Efficient development of applications on etextiles will require significant software services support. This paper analyzes two representative e-textile applications for their software service requirements. Based on this analysis, three services particularly affected by the e-textile design space—fault tolerance, physical configuration, and processing element selection--are described in detail. Each service is considered at the application level, implementation level, and the hardware support level.

Managed Utility Computing: The Grid as Management Backplane

Enterprise IT exhibits increasingly complex networked systems and distributed applications, making the task of an IT operator or administrator exceedingly difficult. We argue in the keynote associated with this paper for the necessity of a clean, standardized, service-centric software architecture to automate and facilitate operator tasks throughout the life-cycle of systems and applications. W...

The Grid as Management Backplane

Next-generation management software must facilitate automated and businessdriven management, for systems with increasing scale, heterogeneity and federation challenges. Existing management software is not designed for this. We argue that it is necessary for management software to adopt a clean, standardized, service-centric software architecture. In particular, we make the case that the Grid, a...

A Terabit Multi-Service Switch With Quality Of Service Support

The Yuni switch architecture, which will be available in silicon later this year, enables a scalable switching platform from multi-gigabits to multi-terabits per second. The solution consists of six custom integrated circuits which utilizes standard CMOS technology, as well as commercially available SRAM’s and high-speed SERDES (serializer/deserializer) chips. The Yuni architecture provides the...

1 Exposed versus Encapsulated Approaches to Grid Service Architecture

The dichotomy between the exposed and encapsulated approaches to computer systems architectures is well known in contexts such as the processor design (RISC vs. CISC) and layered network service stacks. In this paper we examine how this basic choice of approaches arises in the design of the Internet Backplane Protocol, a network storage service, and as an issue in Grid architecture more generally.

Communications in Electronic Textile Systems

Electronic textiles (e-textiles) are emerging as a novel method for constructing electronic systems in wearable and large area applications. This new type of processing system merges textile and electronic technologies. This paper studies the communication requirements between the computing and sensing elements of an e-textile. This communication is studied through the construction of a prototy...
